Gasometer Town, 3 offices, Vienna (2001)

With Products of Play.

Austrian architectects Propeller Z were given the commission of designing the new offices for Hutchison 3G (also know simply as "3"). Due to their location being a renovated gas power station (a gasometer) outside Vienna, the offices were circular in layout with a central corridor running through the whole space. The offices spread over 3 floors, and 3 designer teams were asked to provide visual narratives to unfold on the walls of the central corridor: Products of Play, Alexei Tylevich and Mevis & van Deursen.

Our solution was to use the circle as a starting point to create an algorithmic shape consisting of layered sine waves. This wave shape ran along the whole circumference of the corridor, with changes of scale and color occuring as it went to create localised visual "events". Propeller Z specified a navigation system given in degrees, to which we added compass directions and distance to the elevators.
