amoebaAbstracts 1-3: Built with Processing

An Innovative Fusion of Art and Technology

Algorithms | Free Full-Text | Building a Technology Recommender ...

Artistic expression and technology collide in the ingenious project known as amoebaAbstracts 1-3. A brainchild of computational creativity, this installation was conceived and executed for the "My language" exhibition at the Stavanger Kulturhus. At its core, amoebaAbstracts is a statement on the information saturation of the digital era, crafted using a unique tool: Processing.

The Mechanisms Behind the Machine

The project harnesses the capabilities of a web spider, a type of software that crawls the internet akin to how a biological amoeba traverses its environment—filtering its food from the substrates. In the case of amoebaAbstracts, the web pages are the substrates being consumed. This cybernetic organism navigates the internet with a purpose: digesting the content of websites and producing a foundational analysis of their textual essence.

The Unseen Brain

Hearing Color Through A Cyborg

Shrouded from the viewer's eyes, a computer thrums with activity—untouched and unobserved. It acts as the nucleus of the installation, processing the multitude of data. The choice to keep the electronic mind out of sight underscores the often invisible and enigmatic nature of data processing that underpins our digital world.

Analog Output in a Digital Age

Bridging the gap between the digital and the physical is an industrial thermal-paper printer, repurposed to serve as a tangible output for intangible data. Each "receipt" printed is not a transaction of commerce but of information—a dossier on a webpage's content. This continuous stream of paper slowly accumulates into a physical manifestation of the web's vastness, each slip a testament to a single, digested webpage.

Ironically, the final artistic piece is not the web spider or its algorithmic processes, but the ever-growing heap of thermal paper accumulating below. The sea of receipts becomes an installation in itself—a chaotic, yet poignant, commentary on the deluge of information we navigate daily. It confronts the audience with a visceral representation of the internet's immensity and challenges the concept of what renders information meaningful or redundant.

The Intersection of Travel and Technology in Art

In much the same way an individual navigates the complex web of streets in an unfamiliar city, amoebaAbstracts 1-3 traverses the intricate paths of the internet. The connection between travel and the project lies in the comparison of experiences; the overwhelming sensations faced when exploring a new destination mirror the overload of data encountered online. Just as travelers seek meaningful experiences amidst the cacophony of sights and sounds, amoebaAbstracts seeks to distill value from the infinite noise of the web. As an exhibition, it may prod visitors not only to consider the nature of their digital journeys but to reflect on their physical ones as well.
